The House at Smoko is a spectacular luxury retreat, nestled on 28 acres between the picturesque towns of Bright; Harrietville in Victoria’s High Country. Although it feels a world away, The House at Smoko is just 10 minutes out of the Great Alpine Valleys most famous town of Bright, 30 minutes from Mt Hotham ski resort and one hour from Falls Creek.

Set among a garden of towering wild Elm; Oak trees and with dramatic views of Mt Feathertop and the Smoko Valley, The House at Smoko is a rich tapestry of craftsmanship, beauty, and history.

Initially inspired by the mountain cattlemen’s huts and tobacco drying kilns which punctuate the local landscape, The House at Smoko’s also reflects the works of Christopher Alexander, a noted US architect, and scholar who formulated a “pattern language” of ways houses can be designed to support sociable places.

After 12 years and over one hundred revisions, more than forty patterns were used and the results are breathtaking.

From the outside, The House at Smoko is imposing yet in harmony with its surrounds. Local stone, corrugated iron, and timber are all left in their natural state as though the structure rose out of the earth on its own. Inside, light is captured from all angles; views are framed from dozens of aspects, and spaces serve to inspire and relax.

Varying ceiling heights make rooms feel either more intimate or more sociable and unique design features and chic interior furnishings make this a modern day masterpiece with a feeling of yesteryear.

Yet beauty isn’t confined to the house itself. Two acres of wonderland gardens, 16 acres of grazing land and 12 acres of bush lead down to the crystal clear water of the Ovens River which gently flows along the boundary.
